Breaking: OpenAI vs Google (GOOG)

Money. Get back. I’m alright, Sundar, keep your hands off my stack. - Sam Altman, maybe.

Cue Pink Floyd's "Money"...

With its iconic cash register sounds and biting lyrics about greed and ambition.

But it's not Roger Waters and David Gilmour—two earlier visionaries with differing ideas on the direction of their craft—vying for control and recognition...

Instead, it's two boring nerds.

Sundar Pichai, the longstanding CEO of Google is singing these lines today...

To Sam Altman, the bold and ambitious leader of OpenAI.

Money. It's a crime. Share it fairly, but don't mess with the users on my site. - Sundar Pichai, maybe.

At stake is nothing less than the future of how humans access information...

A market that influences billions of users and generates hundreds of billions of dollars annually.

Google, once the unchallenged psychedelic rock star of information access...

Now finds its opener a much cooler up and coming pop punk band…

Because today, the stage was set for a dramatic battle of the bands that could redefine how billions of people access knowledge…

With the launch of OpenAI Search.

OpenAI Search

Just a few weeks ago, Sage Research predicted a seismic shift in the search engine landscape like this.

Becoming bogged down by excessive ads and failing to deliver the straightforward, high-quality results users expect.

In fact, the very day we published our article Google's head of search, Prabhakar Raghavan, announced his departure from search…

Prabhakar. Get away. You get a good job with more pay and you're okay.

Sundar Pichai, maybe.

And, today OpenAI windmilled out an E chord on a dual Hiwatt amp dialed up to eleven…

By officially launching ChatGPT Search.

(Of course, they could have just called it ChatGPT Anything Else. But that makes the rivalry too boring.)

ChatGPT Search marks a significant challenge to traditional search engines like Google.

Delivering real-time information seamlessly in a chat format, without the burden of excessive advertising at best...

And massive confusion at worst… is great for humans.

The over-reliance on ads has left Google open to disruption from AI tools that provide direct, user-centric answers...

And—don't yet—count advertising as a big revenue source.

Of course, this user-centric orientation won't last forever.

We speculated that a more effective ad model within AI assistants could even cause the death of Google's ad revenue...

Some day, ChatGPT may have their own ad network.

Money. Get back. I’m alright, Sundar, keep your hands off my stack. - Sam Altman, maybe.

Until then...

Friction is down.

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Google may not be dead, but this is certainly the start of a battle for the future of search...

One we will be following closely for you.

Search is a $204 billion market... projected to grow to $368 billion by 2031...

And the AI assistant market is projected to grow from $14 billion to $60 billion by 2029.

While the lines between these two markets will blur... we think both numbers are way low, dude.

No matter what happens, we’ll be tracking the investing opportunities for you.

Grab that cash with both hands and make a stash,
